Haile Gold Mine and York Technical College Foundation, Inc. are partnering to award five annual $6,000 Haile Opportunity Scholarships to current or prospective students in engineering, automotive, electrical, and welding programs.
The first round of scholarships will award for the Fall 2022 semester.
“We are always looking for new and unique ways to attract great employees who have the skills and training we need for the many career opportunities at Haile Gold Mine,” Executive General Manager David Londono said. “Through these scholarships, we can partner with a great school like York Tech and positively impact people’s lives.”
Each recipient will receive support for a maximum of two years. Students can use the scholarship to pay tuition, books, associated fees, program-required tools, and necessary personal protective equipment.
“Thanks to this generous investment, York Technical College Foundation will be able to further support students seeking educational and career opportunities in our communities,” said Tisha Poteat, the interim executive director of the York Technical College Foundation. “The Haile Opportunity Scholarship will provide resources and work-based learning opportunities to assist the College in meeting the growing need for a highly trained and skilled workforce.”
Eligible Degree and Certificate programs at York Tech include Automotive Technology, Diesel Engine Performance General Technology Specialization, General Engineering Technology Engineering Transfer, General Engineering Technology Mechanical Engineering Transfer, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Management Utility Line Worker Specialization, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Welding General Technology Specialization, Basic Electricity Certificate, Basic Welding Certificate, Residential/Commercial Wiring Certificate, and Utility Line Worker Certificate.
To be eligible, students must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and a letter of recommendation from a York faculty member, a previous high school or college institution, or an employer highlighting the applicant’s skills and achievements. A one-page personal statement describing the applicant’s goals and commitment to education is also required.
Students can apply for the scholarship directly through the school. The York Tech Scholarship Committee will make the selections by carefully reviewing each application to select five deserving recipients for the merit-based scholarship.

The York Tech partnership opens the door to other opportunities at Haile Gold Mine, including a pathway to certifications, internship and apprenticeship programs, and leadership skills training.

The scholarship is also available to current Haile employees furthering their education.
